Over the past 100 years, electron beams have repeatedly advanced our understanding of the composition and structure of matter on the nanoscale. Combining electron microscopy with laser illumination of the sample yields manifold opportunities in studying optical excitations and transient phenomena, with applications ranging from materials science to quantum optics.
This talk will introduce principles and applications of ultrafast electron microscopy and diffraction. Examples include the study of structural phase transitions and the phase-resolved measurement of optical near fields. Moreover, recent technological developments facilitate coherent couplings of electron beams to photonic structures and cavities. Finally, electron-photon and electron-electron coincidence measurements reveal few-particle correlations and open up the field of free-electron quantum optics.
